Deborah Whitman – Sculptor
Town of Norwich
I started carving abstract human figures in wood and stone 1982. Wood was my first love because the grain and essence is beautiful to work in. While living in Colorado I started carving alabaster which is soft and varies in pretty colors. I started working in cement in 1997 so I could make outdoor garden sculptures and create larger pieces than what I am able to carve out of wood. I started making cement animal castings in 2004, starting with making the original in wax or clay, then making rubber molds which I fill with a cement mix.
I prefer telling a story through abstract figures that captures the universal human desires of all cultures, ages and sex such as a child sitting on an adult’s lap or two people hugging. My animal series began in 2004 as a reflection to the stillness and comfort I receive while watching and appreciating wildlife.
Upon my return from a vacation in Utah and Colorado in 2007, I revived my love of pen & ink drawings as my way of keeping those places that inspire me close to my heart.
For the most part I am self taught but I did learn the basics and importance of observation and carving at Oswego College for my art degree. I was one of the first MIC members in 1997 and rejoined in 2005.
