Kathleen Coates – Photographer
Town of Norwich
I have always been interested in photography. The stories that photographs tell intrigued me. I find that film photography expresses the true essence of life. I especially love black and white photography and its’ ability to capture the moment and make it timeless. I know the new wave of photography is digital, but I find that the challenge of photography is with film. What you see in a film photograph is real, untouched, and innocent.
I consider myself a self taught photographer. I find inspiration from Ansel Adams and Alex Petersen, an artist whom I first met at Colorscape here in Norwich. My first real photography gig was to take pictures of my son as he played Pop Warner football. His coach Kurt Edwards enjoyed my pictures and has many of them hanging in his office. Through encouragement from my family and friends, I decided to become a member of Made in Chenango.
I am fortunate to be able to pursue my love of photography while still finding time to serve on the Norwich School Board of Education. Education, creating opportunities of learning for all children is my second passion.
I hope you find the timelessness of life through my photographs.
Cathy joined MIC in 2003.
